Success of the small mass-ratio approximation during the final orbits of binary black hole simulations

چکیده

Recent studies have shown the surprising effectiveness of small mass-ratio approximation (SMR) in modeling relativistic two-body problem even at comparable masses. Up to now this has been demonstrated only during inspiral, before binary transitions into plunge and merger. Here we examine binding energy nonspinning black hole simulations with mass ratios from $20\ensuremath{\mathbin:}1$ equal mass. We show for first time that binaries undergo a transition as predicted by analytic theory, estimate size region, which is $\ensuremath{\sim}10$ gravitational wave cycles binaries. By including transition, SMR expansion accurate until last cycle emission. This true such those observed current detectors, where often makes up much signal. Our work provides further evidence can be directly applied observations.

Binary black hole merger in the extreme mass ratio limit

We discuss the transition from quasi-circular inspiral to plunge of a system of two nonrotating black holes of masses m1 and m2 in the extreme mass ratio limit m1m2 ≪ (m1+m2). In the spirit of the Effective One Body (EOB) approach to the general relativistic dynamics of binary systems, the dynamics of the two black hole system is represented in terms of an effective particle of mass μ ≡ m1m2/(m...

Resonant recoil in extreme mass ratio binary black hole mergers

The inspiral and merger of a binary black hole system generally leads to an asymmetric distribution of emitted radiation, and hence a recoil of the remnant black hole directed opposite to the net linear momentum radiated. The recoil velocity is generally largest for comparable mass black holes and particular spin configurations, and approaches zero in the extreme mass ratio limit. It is general...
